For Jonah Cadieux-Johnson, the chance to buy Detonate Brewing Company in Summerland was the perfect opportunity.

Cadieux-Johnson, who had grown up in Summerland, wanted to move back and settle down in the community. The brewery was an ideal fit for his interests.

While he has a degree in natural resource conservation, he developed a passion for working in the restaurant industry.

The opportunity to purchase Detonate came around a month after he had returned to Summerland. The brewery is in the James Lake Industrial Area, away from the downtown core of the community. However, it had a reputation for brewing good beer. The brewery continues to use those recipes to create its beers.

Cadieux-Johnson said some of the craft beers from Detonate, such as a taco beer, do not fall into standard beer categories.

鈥淚鈥檓 so fortunate that I get the variability I do,鈥 he said.

While he enjoys operating the brewery, he said inflation is affecting his business. Since he purchased Detonate, grain prices have risen by 40 per cent. Other beer ingredients are also more expensive than in the past.

He is working with B.C.-based agricultural producers, and his distributor is based in the province.

Cadieux-Johnson has expanded the tasting room at the brewery and has food trucks on site to provide food for patrons.

Earlier this year, his efforts at the brewery were recognized as he received the Young Entrepreneur of the Year award at the 83rd annual Summerland Business and Community Excellence Awards. There were four nominees in this category.
