琉璃神社's Vice and Virtue Brewing returns, under Red Bird's ownership

"Same great beer, new great food"

Craft beer fans in 琉璃神社 can rejoice as Vice and Virtue Brewing has reopened.

The brewery closed on Dec. 21, 2024, after the owners announced they had sold their company to Red Bird Brewing, located down the street. As part of the sale, Red Bird also acquired all of the Vice and Virtue beer recipes.

But now, after three months of being closed, Red Bird Brewing has reopened Vice and Virtue, a 19+ facility, with a new vibe and new food menu.

"We've always loved this place and it's a nice staple to people in the Okanagan and in the brewery scene in the North End, so we wanted to bring it back to life," Matt Martin, the head chef of both Vice and Virtue Brewing and Red Bird Brewing told Black Press Media. "We are staying true to what Vice and Virtue always was, but just trying to elevate it a little bit."

Over the last three months, the Red Bird team has redecorated the interior of Vice and Virtue with plenty of plants and a black, green and gold aesthetic.

The brewery team plans to tweak some of the old beer recipes while adding new beers as time goes on. Additionally, Martin wanted to keep smoked meat on the menu, something the former owners always ensured was available.

"It's been very exciting for me from a culinary standpoint, it's been really fun," said Martin. "And now getting to be in this space, using the big Yoder Smoker that we have out back. I was always a fan of Vice and Virtue, I used to come back here all the time back in the day,"

Because of that and now being the head chef, Martin gets to put his own twist on the menu. Because the brewery just reopened on the March 15-16 weekend, the menu is fairly small for now but it includes honey-sesame house-made dinner rolls that are made fresh daily and used for pork belly burnt end sliders. There is also a smoked short rib, smoked chicken wings tossed in a gochujang glaze and creme brulee for dessert.

"Same great beer, new great food," said Martin.

Vice and Virtue has reopened at its old location at 1037 Richter Street while the coffee shop that Red Bird announced on Dec. 17, 2024, is still in the works and going to open two doors down at 1043 Richter Street. Additionally at that location is , which is a division of Cellar-Tek. It's unknown when the coffee shop is opening.

Vice and Virtue is open from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays, and closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
