The annual kikinee festival is taking place at Mission Creek Regional Park on Sept. 14.

The Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) will celebrate the return of spawning salmon with the annual kikinee festival on Saturday, Sept. 14.

"During a small window in the summer, work to prepare the spawning channel in Mission Creek clears debris and creates optimal conditions to help salmon eggs survive over several months until they hatch and learn to swim," said RDCO in a release. "Four new riffles were completed earlier this summer to help salmon make their way upstream."

The RDCO has celebrated the yearly phenomena for the last two decades with information sessions, events, and programs to educate people who visit the park.

This year's celebration takes place at Mission Creek Regional Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It's family-friendly and free to all.
