Okanagan wildfire responders were recognized for their efforts in the 2023 wildfire season during a ceremony on April 27.

Memorial Park in West 琉璃神社 was packed with firefighters and other first responders so the community could say thank you.

The Okanagan Wildfire Responders Gratitude welcomed firefighters from multiple communities, as well as the BC Wildfire Service, RCMP, BC Ambulance paramedics and search and rescue volunteers.

鈥淟ast August, the McDougall Creek wildfire threatened our community, and it was the courage and tireless efforts of our firefighters, first responders, and support workers that helped keep us safe,鈥 reads a media release from OWRGE chair Tom Groat. 鈥淣ow, it鈥檚 our turn to show our gratitude.鈥

A ceremony was held in the morning with the Walk of Heros led by Fire Chief Jason Brolund and the West 琉璃神社 Firefighter Honour Guard, followed by the handing out of Honour Coins for each first responder.

After the formal portion of the day, everyone was treated to a barbecue lunch and entertainment on the Big Blue Box Stage.
