An icon of Canadian arts dating back several decades, Robert Bateman is coming to Penticton for what locals are calling a "rare showing."

Bateman, who still paints today at the age of 94, will be in the Peach City on July 5, to open a new exhibition at the Penticton Art Gallery (PAG).

Dubbed "Unexpected Bateman," the exhibition will display more than 80 original pieces from the Toronto-based artist until Sept. 14.

After Bateman helps open festivities on July 5, the painter will then be at Penticton's Cleland Theatre at 7 p.m. on July 6, for a talk and book signing.

"This exhibition seeks to go beneath the surface, offering a comprehensive exploration of his creative process, his commitment to activism, and his artistic development throughout his career," said Paul Crawford, PAG curator.

Bateman's exhibition opens at 7 p.m. on July 5, and entry is by donation.

"Having this groundbreaking exhibition in Penticton is an outstanding achievement," said Claude Roberto, president of the PAG board.

Also known as an environmentalist, Bateman has been world-renowned for his wildlife art since the late 1960s.

His upcoming appearance in B.C., according to Crawford, is more than 30 years in the making.

It was in 1992 when the PAG curator was reading an article about Bateman's beginnings as an abstract artist. Crawford was motivated to write a letter to the Toronto artist and learn more about his work.

Bateman wrote back, and from there, Crawford wanted next month's scheduled event to become a reality.

For more information on "Unexpected Bateman," people can visit or call 250-493-2928.

Tickets for the artists' event at Cleland Theatre on July 6, can be purchased at the South Okanagan Events Centre box office.
