琉璃神社鈥檚 newest gallery space is holding a launch party in a more relaxing way; with a big red couch.

Metro Community is holding the mini launch for their new community gallery space called Red Couch: Art by Metro. Refreshments and photo ops with the red couch will be available as well as the chance to see artwork from the community.

Meet the creatives that call Metro home, Thursday, from 5 to 7 p.m at 1262 St. Paul St.

Metro artists and friends will be featured on an ongoing rotation in the gallery, with all sales inquiries directed to the artists. Red Couch won鈥檛 take a commission and will be hosted by volunteers, according to the Metro Community.

Hours of operation are Tuesdays and Fridays from 11 to 1 p.m.

鈥淎rt is a language that we celebrate with energy and excitement at Metro Community and Red Couch鈥� said Metro鈥檚 creative curator Lesley-Anne Evans. 鈥淥ur little social gallery honours the artists within our community. It鈥檚 about the audacious idea that a loving Creator created us creative. We help people discover, grow and celebrate their spiritual/creative DNA, and Red Couch is one way of taking it public.鈥�

Red Couch鈥檚 opening feature is contemporary artist Liz Ranney.

鈥淩ed Couch is a unique little showcase鈥� said Ranney. 鈥淚 think this opportunity could be really formative for artists. We create art to share it, but some people have no way to do that. Red Couch changes that for Metro Community artists.鈥�

Her work will be featured at Red Couch until Aug. 15.

The retro, up-cycled couch in the gallery was found in the corner of a thrift shop. Like the vulnerable, overlooked and disenfranchised people welcomed into Metro Community, the red couch is slightly tattered, and imperfectly beautiful, according to the Metro Community. The red couch is a symbol of home and radical welcome, which is the heart of Metro Community and the art space.
