Amid an alarming rate of pet surrenders due to financial and other challenges, the Lumby Food Bank and Fletcher's Keep Senior Dog Foundation have launched a new initiative to help owners of senior dogs in the North Okanagan.
Supported by the Community Foundation of North Okanagan, the Paws Nourish and Nurture Wellness Alliance Program targets the unique challenges owners of senior dogs face, as just like people, these pets often incur higher care costs due to age.
"Senior dogs are often overlooked, yet their care is critical," said Anita Dunford, volunteer executive director at Fletcher's Keep. "This program focuses on these vulnerable pets and ensures they remain with their families, particularly during hard times when companionship is important for people鈥檚 health and well-being."
Lumby Food Bank president Robert Wilkinson added: "With rapidly increasing numbers of people in our communities struggling to feed themselves, this partnership helps prevent the difficult choice between personal well-being and elderly dog pet care."
The program is described as a community effort across the North Okanagan, enhancing access to age-related dog food and funding for essential veterinary services.
The program aims to prevent unnecessary pet surrenders and abandonment of senior dogs in need, by supporting their struggling owners.
