The 15th Annual Indigenous Family Gathering was full of free fun and learning in West 琉璃神社. 

The event was held at Kal Tire on Aug. 18 from 12 to 3 p.m.

Kim Kosik helped to organize the event. 

"It's held in collaboration with Westbank First Nation, Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society, Metis Community Services Society, Interior Health and School District 23."

Together the groups advocate for children in the Central Okanagan and 15 years ago came together to host a free event where families can enjoy time together while learning about their culture. 

Festivities included face painting, balloon animals, bouncy houses, an exotic animal petting zoo, drumming circle and a barbecue lunch. 

Each family got swag bags and resource sheets to take home. 

"I think a lot of families don't have the access to learn about their Indigenous culture and lean into that," Kosik said. "This opportunity brings families together in a very safe, non-threatening environment. They can feel free to ask questions and participate in drumming, which often kids have never touched a drum before so it's a big highlight."

The event had to change venues last minute, but that didn't stop dozens of families from showing up.
