No one wants to have dog鈥檚 breath, not even a dog.
Keeping pets鈥 teeth clean is an important part of making sure animals stay happy and healthy. However, for many seniors living in B.C., the rising costs of veterinary care mean their beloved older companions are suffering in silence.
This is why Fletcher鈥檚 Keep Senior Dog Foundation is using National Pet Dental Health Month to highlight the importance of teeth cleaning, with a new BC Gaming 50/50 draw.
Recently, an Okanagan senior had to rely on Fletcher鈥檚 for urgent care.
Alana, who relies on a breathing apparatus and struggles to make ends meet, was told her best friend and freelance therapy dog, Sandy, desperately needed dental care.
After being unable to afford pet insurance or a costly procedure, she turned to Fletcher鈥檚 Keep Senior Dog Foundation for help.
According to Fletcher鈥檚, Sandy ended up having 21 teeth pulled due to severe periodontal disease.
鈥淚 could never have afforded to get her treated, and the thought of her being in pain or having to surrender her was horrifying. Their outstanding help has enabled us to stay together for many years,鈥 said Alana.
During National Pet Dental Health Month, Fletcher鈥檚 is asking Okanagan residents to support its BC Gaming 50/50 draw, where tickets start at $5.
Proceeds will go toward lifesaving medical and dental care for more senior dogs in need like Sandy and their struggling owners.
Anita Dunford, the executive director of Fletcher鈥檚 Keep Senior Dog Foundation, said this gaming draw is for more than just teeth.
鈥淔or many struggling pet owners, especially seniors, a dog is their lifeline - their best friend, family, and only companion. With this 50/50 draw, we can help preserve the human-canine bond, keep pets and their people together, and ensure these loyal companions get the care they deserve,鈥 said Dunford.
