The Shuswap community is making some Moves for Micah in support of a Falkland family that tragically lost their young son in January.

Two-year-old Micah Meachem was fatally hit by a car on Jan. 29 and parents Scott and Erin are struggling as they grieve their loss, but are looking to heal through helping others facing similar heartbreak. To support their goal of creating a healing centre called Bear Ridge Sanctuary on the property where Micah was born, friends have organized a fundraising extravaganza.

Moves for Micah, so named because the toddler was always on the move, will take place on Friday, June 7 at the Night Café in downtown Salmon Arm. The evening will include three live bands – The Oot n’ Oots, Route97 and Skeleton Parade – as well as a balloon pop, photo booth, silent auction and door prizes with three grand prizes, including a donation from Twin Anchors. Food will be available as will a signature cocktail.

The main event, however, is a Dance-a-Thon, that will include an amateur hour and semi-pro/pro category, with organizers currently taking pledges. Doors open at 4 p.m. with a kid-friendly portion until 8 p.m. at which time there will be a message from organizers as they prepare for the Dance-a-Thon, with amateurs going from 9 to 10 p.m. followed by the pros from 10 to 11 p.m.

The event is free to attend, though registration is required, and donations are gratefully accepted. Registration can be done online at under Moves for Micah, with a link also available on Facebook under the same name. Donations can be made directly through registration, or by pledging a dancer through that as well.

All proceeds go to Move for Micah in support of the family, which has a baby on the way, and their dream of a healing centre that will be a place open to all, but especially others who have suffered the loss of a child.
