Easter Seals Camp in Lake Country 鈥 Camp Winfield 鈥 is a fully accessible facility for children and adults with physical and cognitive abilities.
Every summer the camp environment with very few limits puts smiles and laughter on the faces of hundreds of raucous, happy campers.
Vernon Lions Club member Michele Materi-Baker is very familiar with Easter Seals Camp. A similar facility in Squamish, sponsored by the local Lions Club there, provided a happy outlet for her sister who, she said, still has fond memories of that camp.
Materi-Baker and her fellow Vernon Lions Club members help out the Lake Country Camp by hosting a charity golf tournament.
The sixth annual Vernon Lions Club Charity Golf Tournament and Auction Fundraiser in support of Camp Winfield is set for Sunday, May 26, with a 2 p.m. shotgun start at the Vernon Golf and Country Club.
鈥淵our participation goes a long way to funding a beautiful and safe environment for those in our community with special needs to make memories that will last a lifetime,鈥 said Materi-Baker, with the Vernon Lions Club for seven years now.
All proceeds from the tournament go to Camp Winfield.
The golf event is a fun 17+ hole (course upgrade means everyone gets at least one par) scramble tournament to help fund Camp Winfield, supporting facility maintenance and improvements, and subsidizing camperships for children with special needs.
There will be putting contests, long drives and closest to the pins competition during the tournament.
Entry fee is $200 each, $800 per four-person team, and includes golf, dinner, auction prizes, and a ton of fun.
Golfers and sponsors for the tournament are still needed. No experience is needed to play; just a desire to have fun and help raise money for the camp.
