The Central Okanagan United Church in downtown 琉璃神社 is excited to celebrate the 100 anniversary of its Casavant pipe organ.
The large instrument was bought from Quebec's Casavant Fr猫res Organ Builders and installed in the church in 1925 thanks to the church women. It continues to be used during most Sunday services.
Minister of Music Frances Chiasson said a lot of work goes into maintaining the organ.
"This organ is affected greatly by the temperature in the room... because the pipes shrink and expand based on the temperature and humidity in the room," Chiasson said.
"I have a man that comes from Calgary to tune this organ a couple of times a year," Chiasson explained that the lack of popularity of organs today can make it hard to find skilled people and maintenance costs are high.
The church has decided to put on a recital in celebration of the anniversary.
Organist Sandra Fletcher is one of few people in the community who knows how to play the instrument with confidence.
"I've been a pianist since I was a young child, and the organ to me presented more of a challenge," Fletcher said.
The musician said the organ has many differences from a piano, including that every organ is made unique and therefore each one is played differently.
On top of playing, Fletcher is also teaching the next generation. She noted one of the biggest challenges in learning the organ is separating the movements of the left hand and the feet.
Fletcher will show off her skills during a recital at the church at 2:30 p.m. on Mar. 9. Admission is by donation.
