VIDEO: Premier鈥檚 Awards recognize Summerland teacher and District Principal

Summerland teacher Jenny Mitchell and District Principal Dustin Hyde recognized for leadership

Two educators in the Okanagan Skaha school district have been recognized with the Premier鈥檚 Award for Excellence in Education.

Jenny Mitchell, a teacher and coach at Summerland Middle School was given the award in Community Engagement.

Lake City Basketball co-director Dustin Hyde who is District Principal of Indigenous Education and Equity was awarded in District Leadership.

鈥淲hat I鈥檓 proud of is my role in the after-school sports and arts initiative. We work to reduce the barriers so we give every student a chance to learn a new sport or art,鈥 said Mitchell in her award-recipient video. 鈥淚 think what I do is help others be successful. To see them persevere through a challenge 鈥 is magical.鈥

鈥淭he Board of Education is honoured to have Jenny Mitchell and Dustin Hyde as a part of our amazing team of educators. Thank you for the passion and dedication you bring to School District No. 67,鈥 said Chair James Palanio.

Mitchell and Hyde were in Victoria to receive their awards from Premier David Eby at a ceremony at Government House. They were among 34 recognized in 20 different categories.

Hyde has been a leader in Indigenous education in School District 67.

鈥淚 have the honour of working with Indigenous families and community members and we have helped bring educators together to deepen the learning of anti-racism education,鈥 said Hyde in his award-recipient video.

鈥淭ruth and Reconciliation is a journey and Mr. Hyde strives to come up with ideas so everyone becomes part of that journey,鈥 said former district principal Kathie Pierre who nominated him. 鈥淗e鈥檚 a phenomenal leader and every day he brings his best to the job.鈥
