What makes a good seed for Okanagan gardens?

GARDENER'S DIARY: Seed selection and benefits of parsnips

Parsnips and carrots are on the menu for Jocelyne Sewell this year as she prepares to plant her garden.

Vegetable and flower seeds are showing up on many stores鈥 shelves. Must be gardening time soon.

But, what makes a good seed? Following taken from: .

"Good seeds grow into food you enjoy eating. Good seeds are easily accessible to farmers and gardeners. They don鈥檛 harm pollinators or wildlife. They grow well because they鈥檝e had the chance to adapt to local conditions. They鈥檙e naturally robust and don鈥檛 require synthetic pesticides. They are backed by centuries of selective crossing and breeding by farmers and gardeners.

"Every region needs its own resilient supply of diverse, locally-grown seeds. It鈥檚 the first condition of food sovereignty, and the key to growing good food, sustainably. It鈥檚 also an increasingly urgent issue: in the 20th century alone, 75 per cent of crop diversity has been lost. When you plant seeds you鈥檝e saved yourself, or seeds you purchased from an independent seed company in your area, you help preserve seed diversity.鈥

I will be starting my greens this coming week. This year I also plan on lots of carrots and parsnips.

The following link will help you about starting parsnips:  (and other choices).

The other link is about the health benefit of eating parsnips:

This information is taken from above link. A lot more details in the whole article.

Parsnips are a delicious type of root vegetable that has been cultivated and enjoyed around the world for thousands of years. Closely related to other vegetables like carrots and parsley roots, parsnips have long, cream-coloured tuberous roots with a sweet, slightly nutty flavour.

In addition to bringing a unique taste to your dishes, parsnips are incredibly nutritious and have been associated with many health benefits. Parsnips are an excellent source of many important nutrients, packing a hearty dose of fibre, vitamins, and minerals into each serving.

In particular, parsnips are a great source of vitamin C, vitamin K, and folate, as well as several other important micronutrients.

Parsnips are high in antioxidants including vitamin C and polyacetylenes that may prevent oxidative stress and chronic conditions like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.

Parsnips are high in fibre, which can support regularity, improve your digestive health, regulate blood sugar levels, and enhance heart health. Parsnips are low in calories but contain a good amount of water and fibre, both of which may benefit weight loss.

Parsnips are high in vitamin C and antioxidants, both of which may enhance your immune function and optimize health.
