The Summerland Singers and Players will celebrate the age of radio as they stage A Christmas Carol: A Live Radio Play.

The play is based on the heyday of radio, when dramas, comedies and other forms of entertainment could be heard. Many shows were broadcast in front of a live studio audience.

The rendition of the Charles Dickens holiday classic will feature five actors bringing to life more than 30 characters.

They will perform in front of old-style microphones and will be wearing clothing from the 1940s.

On one side of the stage, a foley artist will use a variety of objects and materials to produce the needed sound effects such as doorbells and chimes to rattling chains and howling ghosts.

There will also be commercials with advertising jingles.

鈥淚n this play, the audience is more than just spectators 鈥 they are part of the show,鈥 said director Linda Guebert. 鈥淭hey play the radio studio audience and are encouraged to applaud, laugh or cry as the spirit moves them.鈥

Actors in the play are Bryan Laver, Dawn Bassett, Al Toots, Cheryl Gill and James Fofonoff. Craig Henderson will be the foley artist and Ken Gray will provide musical accompaniment.

A Christmas Carol: A Live Radio Play will be performed at Summerland Alliance Church Dec. 6 to 8 and 13 to 15. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7 p.m. while Sunday performances are at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $25 ($22 for seniors and students). They are available online at Ticket Owl, , at Artisans of the Okanagan Store and at the door.
