The first ever 48 hour film project in the Okanagan wrapped up with its awards show, with a bevy of local filmmakers being honoured.
The unique competition began on Sept. 15, where 13 teams hailing from various corners of B.C. embarked on a hectic journey to construct a seven-minute short film in just 48 hours.
Teams from Vernon, Salmon Arm, 琉璃神社, Kamloops and Vancouver signed up, where each drew genres, a prop, character, and a line of dialogue from a hat. From there, they had until Sept. 17 to write, direct, shoot and edit a cinematic masterpiece.
Then, on Oct. 11, the films were shown at the Vernon Towne Theatre at a screening event. Three days later, the Theatre hosted the award show, where the winners were announced.
The ceremony celebrated the filmmakers and unveiled the Best Film recipient, determined by a panel of esteemed judges from the local film industry. The judging panel featured Laurie Case, a producer and director; Kate Twa, an actor, writer, and director; Jeff Myers, a producer, director, and cinematographer; and Angela Quinn, a casting director.
鈥淲e鈥檙e ecstatic to see the Okanagan film community come together in such an inspiring way,鈥 said Okanagan 48 Hour Film Project co-producer Heath Fletcher. 鈥淭he support we鈥檝e received from sponsors, industry professionals, and local resources has been overwhelming. This journey has been a true testament to the power of collaboration and creativity.鈥
The winner of best film was It鈥檚 Not All Right, by the Little Red Hen Studios. This Vernon-led team鈥檚 mockumentary style film on an amateur inventor won the right to represent the Okanagan at Filmapalooza in Lisbon, Portugal in March 2024.
