Okanagan artist bears future with Boys and Girls Club

Tyler Welfing of Vernon donates wood carving to raise funds for new program

Ice, wood, the canvas doesn't matter for Vernon's Tyler Welfing.

He puts his heart into each creation.

Welfing, owner/operator of CarveWel Creations, demonstrated his ability with ice during the recent Vernon Winter Carnival, carving several creations at SilverStar Mountain Resort.

His latest offering on a wood canvas is a carved bear that Welfing has donated to the Boys and Girls Club Okanagan for its new program, Building Futures.

BGC Okanagan plays a vital role in Welfing's family life – it's a second home for his kids, who attend club programs.

"Our children met many new friends over the years at BGC Okanagan," said Welfing. "Through the club, they are given the opportunity to try many new activities that they may not have gotten to experience otherwise. BGC Okanagan provides them with a positive outlet outside of the home."

Welfing wanted to give back after seeing firsthand the positive impact BGC Okanagan has on his children. So he created the one-of-a-kind wooden bear that will help raise funds for BCG Okanagan's new Building Futures program, which was introduced to the public at BCG Okanagan's annual Pink Shirt Day Breakfast.

The sold-out event at ÁðÁ§ÉñÉç's Laurel Packing House on Feb. 26 not only brought the community together in support of kindness and inclusion but also helped raise more $25,000 to continue creating safe, inclusive spaces for children, youth, and families across the Okanagan.

The Building Futures campaign is a fundraising initiative designed to raise awareness and funding for vital programs that serve children and youth.

“For many families, BGC Okanagan is a lifeline, providing more than just child care," said Jeremy Welder, BCG Okanagan CEO. "The programs offer confidence, connection, and opportunity. They ensure that every child, regardless of financial situation, can access enriching activities, supportive mentors, and a safe place to grow."

With community support, BGC Okanagan can continue offering programs that keep costs low and accessibility high.

For example, many recreation programs at clubs are free with a yearly membership of just $10 – removing barriers and ensuring no child is left behind.
