An 11-year-old Kimberley boy has drowned at Wasa Lake.

RCMP was called to Wasa Lake at 3:25 p.m. on Sunday, June 23.

There had been three kids on an inflated tube that flipped over and blew away due to the high wind and rough water that day. Two children made it to the shore, but an 11 year old was discovered to be missing.

RCMP attended and officers were able to get a pontoon boat from a nearby resident that was put out in the water. Within minutes the officers spotted the child in the water. One of the officers jumped in the water, brought the child onto the boat and the officers began performing CPR until bringing the youth to shore where an ambulance was waiting, in addition to STARS air ambulance.

The child was transported to the East Kootenay Regional Hospital where he was later declared deceased.

"I would like to thank the public for their assistance and recognize the heroic efforts of my officers, other first responders and the public at this tragic event," said Kimberley RCMP Detachment Commander Sgt. Steven Woodcox.

"Kimberley RCMP Victim Services are engaged with the family and are supporting them during this trying time."
