The great songs of our time exemplify the number one rule of writing鈥攕how, don鈥檛 tell.
Don鈥檛 just preach and point fingers; paint people as they really are, and folks will relate to the story more than if they feel they鈥檙e being yelled at or subjected to a sermon.
One artist who takes that story-telling tradition to heart is C.R. Avery.
His new album, All the Angels Didn鈥檛 Scare Me, unfolds like an homage to the unsung heroines of the outskirts of contemporary society鈥攖he everyday nine-to-fivers, living and doing what they have to do to keep going.
The East Vancouver songwriter has collaborated with celebrated producer and songwriter Ben Mink on several tracks for Avery鈥檚 new album.
Mink is perhaps best known for working with kd Lang and is a past Juno songwritng award winner.
Raised in small-town Ontario and unable to focus on books as a child, Averu was drawn to all things aural and lyrical鈥攕tand-up comedy, country ballads, sexual adventures and risqu茅 episodes retold in hip hop lyrics.
Over the years, he鈥檚 released 17 albums, from swamp city blues to spoken word performed with the Prague Symphony Orchestra, all infused with an outlaw outlook and rock鈥檔 roll attitude.

On Oct. 6, 4 Peace Country artists will take over Laurels Packinghouse for a 4-hour pop-up exhibition.
Carmen Haakstad, Jim Stokes, Debbie Courvoisier and Carrie Klukas are set to showcase their recent works and introduce themselves to the beautiful Okanagan region.
Stokes and Haakstad draw their inspiration from the northwestern vistas they grew up with.
Their styles are significantly different yet they are synonymous with their love of the land.
Courvoisier, a clay artist whose sculptures are often combined with found objects are a contrast of manufactured and hand-built artworks.
Klukas rounds out the 鈥�4鈥� as the only abstract expressionist.
Her current works utilize patina on metal leaf applied to the acrylic paintings, vibrant and visceral organic works that reflect our inner landscapes.
This event is free to the public. All artists will be in attendance, with 10 per cent of all proceeds donated to the Central Okanagan Hospice Association.

Songs of the Southern Belles is a concert celebrating the melodies and lyrics of an age when country music reigned throughout the airwaves and local dances, set in the traditional style of the Grand Ole Opry.
Singers Anna Jacyszyn and Kinga Heming will relive the stories told through songs originally sung by Nashville Royalty like Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn.
Under the music direction of Sean Bray and Loni Moger, the concert promises to be a walk through country music nostalgia.

Roy Orbison was unmistakable with his trademark sunglasses, his distinctive, powerful voice, his complex compositions and his dark emotional ballads that influenced many songwriters that followed in his footsteps, starting with Bruce Springsteen.
His impassioned voice bridged the gap between baritone and tenor.
This latest Orbison tribute show, The Lonely, delivers a sensitive and dynamic tribute to the rock鈥檔 roll hall of famer.
Mike Demers leads this group of musical journeymen in their mutual and deep appreciation of the timeless Orbison music catalogue of classic hits.

The Rocky Horror Show is a musical with music, lyrics and book by Richard O鈥橞rien.
A humorous tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies of the late 1940s through to the early 鈥�70s, the musical tells the story of a newly engaged couple getting caught in a storm and coming to the home of a mad transvestite scientist unveiling his new creation, a sort of Frankenstein-style monster in the form of an artificially made, fully grown, physically perfect muscle man named Rocky Horror, complete 鈥渨ith blond hair and a tan.鈥�
The original London production of the musical premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in June 1973, running for a total of 2,960 performances at several theatres in London before closing in September 1980.
Its 1974 U.S. debut in Los Angeles had a successful nine-month run but its 1975 Broadway debut at the Belasco Theatre lasted only three previews and 45 showings despite earning one Tony nomination and three Drama Desk nominations.
Various international productions have since spanned across six continents as well as West End and Broadway revivals and eight UK tours.
The musical was adapted into the cult classic 1975 film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, starring Richard O鈥橞rien as Riff Raff, which has the longest-running release in film history.
The musical was ranked eighth in a BBC Radio 2 listener poll of the 鈥淣ation鈥檚 Number One Essential Musicals.鈥�

Ziggy Marley鈥檚 has so far created a profile of a six-time Grammy winner, Emmy winner, humanitarian, singer, songwriter and producer.
His early immersion in music came at age 10 when he sat in on recording sessions with his father, Bob Marley.
As front man to Ziggy Marley and The Melody Makers, the group released eight best-selling albums that garnered three Grammys, with such chart-topping hits as 鈥淟ook Who鈥檚 Dancing,鈥� 鈥淭omorrow People鈥� and 鈥淭umbling Down.鈥�
Ziggy鈥檚 first solo album, Dragonfly was released in 2003 followed by Love is My Religion, which won a Grammy in 2006 for Best Reggae Album.
His third solo album, Family Time, scored him a 5th Grammy award for Best Children鈥檚 Album.
In 2011, Marley released his fourth studio album Wild And Free, which earned him another Grammy nomination, along with penning his first comic book, titled Marijuanaman.
Ziggy Marley Organics, a GMO-free product line including flavoured coconut oils and hemp seed snacks, was started in 2012.

Our Lady Peace and I Mother Earth featuring Edwin, will make a stop in 琉璃神社 has part of a cross-Canada tour this fall.

Having toured together in the mid-1990s for their breakthrough albums, Naveed (OLP) and Dig (IME), both bands are excited to reunite 20 years later on tour together.
鈥淲e鈥檝e always had immense respect for IME,鈥� said Our Lady Peace frontman Raine Maida.
鈥淔rom their very first album Dig, the tour that followed and the Edgefests after that they solidified themselves as a seminal CDN rock band.
鈥淭o share the stage again is exciting both for our common fans & selfishly for us as well.鈥�

Over their 25-year career, Our Lady Peace鈥攃onsisting of Maida, Duncan Coutts and Steve Mazur鈥攈ave won four Juno awards and , 10 Much Music Video Awards.
The group鈥檚 second album, Clumsy, sold more than a million units in Canada alone, qualifying it for the almost-impossible-to-attain Diamond Award, the only alteranative-rock album in Canadian history ever to reach that level.
Brothers Christian and Jagori Tanna met vocalist Edwin in the early 鈥�90s, spawning one of Canada鈥檚 most critically acclaimed bands.
I Mother Earth ended an eight year hiatus in 2012 with two sold out shows at Toronto鈥檚 Sound Academy, and in 2016 announced the return of original vocalist Edwin, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the band鈥檚 benchmark album Scenery and Fish.
The album featured four Top 10 Hits in Canada including 鈥淩aspberry,鈥� 鈥淎nother Sunday,鈥� 鈥淯sed to be Alright鈥� and 鈥淥ne More Astronaut.鈥�.

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of his landmark album, Passion and Warfare, guitarist Steve Vai has embarked on a world tour that will bring him to two stops in B.C., the concert in 琉璃神社 and anotherin Nanaimo.
currently in Europe on the first leg of his very special world tour celebrating one of the greatest instrumental rock guitar recordings of all time.
In this tour, Vai will perform the entire Passion and Warfare record from top to bottom, with some very special surprises in thrown in.
鈥淭he enjoyment that the band is having and the audience response to the shows we are playing in Europe has taken us a bit by surprise,鈥� Vai said.

Raffi is a singer, songwriter, producer, author, lecturer, and tireless advocate for children.
He is best known for his work as a children鈥檚 entertainer whose string of gold and platinum-selling recordings in North America includes his classic song, 鈥淏aby Beluga.鈥�
Written up as 鈥渢he most popular children鈥檚 singer in the English-speaking world鈥� by the Washington Post and 鈥淐anada鈥檚 all time children鈥檚 champion鈥� by the Toronto Star, Raffi is also a recipient of the Order of Canada and the United Nations鈥� Earth Achievement Award.
He has never advertised to children or made any commercial endorsements aimed at kids. His commitment to treating his young fans with respect changed society鈥檚 outlook on music made for children.

Guitarist Jesse Cook will be bringing his concert tour in support of his latest album One World to 琉璃神社 this winter.
Cook鈥檚 new album features music influences from the Middle East, South America and Spain.

Culture Club were one of the biggest pop bands of the 鈥�80s, racking up seven straight Top 10 hits in the UK and nine Top 10 singles in the U.S., while flamboyant lead singerBoy George became a cultural phenomenon.
Along with his cross-dressing fashion style and heavy make-up, Boy George was also noted noted for his biting wit.
Culture Club grew out of the ashes of Sex Gang Children, a band formed by George and bassist Mikey Craig. Drummer Jon Moss and guitarist Roy Hay came on board, and by 1981 the band had been renamed.
Early in 1982, a deal was signed with Virgin Records, but success eluded them until the release of their third single, Do You Really Want To Hurt Me.
The band鈥檚 U.S. success followed early in 1983 with the release of the single I鈥檒l Tumble 4 Ya gained frequent airplay on MTV.
With the followup release of the group鈥檚 second album Colour By Numbers in the fall of 鈥�83, Culture Club was established as one of the top selliing music groups at the time, fueled by the popularity of the lead single Karma Chameleon.
Culture Club鈥檚 popularity peaked with the release of their third album in 鈥�84, Waking Up With The House On Fire.

The 2016 Just For Laughs Comedy Tour will be headlined by comedian and actor Dane Cook, joined by his comic buddies Vinny Fasline and John Campanelli.
Tickets go on sale Sept. 16 for the 琉璃神社 show.
Cook has become one of the largest ticket sellers among today鈥檚 group of comedians perfoming on stage, one of his career highlights being his two sold out shows in one night at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Cook has released eight comedy albums/specials and in 2006, his special Retaliation became the highest charting comedy album in 28 years, earning him a place alongside best-selling comedy vets George Carlin and Steve Martin.
He has guest starred in popular TV shows like Louie and Workaholics on The Comedy Network.
Some of his other film credits include starring roles in My Best Friend鈥檚 Girl with Kate Hudson, Dan In Real Life opposite Steve Carrell and Mr. Brooks with Kevin Costner.
Cook also recently reprised his role as the voice of 鈥淒usty鈥� in Disney鈥檚 animated film Planes: Fire & Rescue, the sequel to Planes, which grossed over $219 million.

Roger Hodgson is an English musician, singer and songwriter, best known as the former co-frontman and founding member of progressive rock band Supertramp.[
Hodgson composed and sang many of Supertramps big hits during the 1970s and early 鈥�80s, including 鈥淒reamer,鈥� 鈥淕ive a Little Bit,鈥� 鈥淏reakfast in America,鈥� 鈥淭ake the Long Way Home,鈥� 鈥淭he Logical Song鈥� and 鈥淚t鈥檚 Raining Again.鈥�
He departed Supertramp in 1983 and moved his family away from the Los Angeles music scene to live a simpler lifestyle close to nature and be home with his children as they were growing up.
Hodgson returned to touring in 2001 as a solo performer an continuing to record albums on his own.
Hodgson along with Rick Davies were the creatuve forces behind Supertramp, a band that first found popularity in Canada before finally getting noticed in the U.S.
Crime of the Century was released in 1974, considered one of the best progressive rock albums of all time.
That was followed up by subsequent albums Crisis? What Crisis?, Even in the Quietest Moments, Breakfast In America and Famous Last Words.
In 1981, Hodgson moved his family from Los Angeles to northern California, where he built a home studio and began his solo recording career, with his first album producing the hit Had A Drean (Sleeping with The Enemy).

Has something escaped? This may be a question that comes to mind when visitors first enter the new garden installed at the 琉璃神社 Art Gallery.
Local artists Wanda Lock and Rena Warren are behind the transformation of the art gallery鈥檚 open-air Rotary Courtyard space as part of the Artist鈥檚 Garden Project series.
The exhibit includes a wagon that looks old and abandoned, and is now overgrown with plants鈥攊t might remind visitors of the kind that once transported exotic animals around as part of a circus caravan.
The installation is fittingly named Escape Artists and the space is filled with all kinds of wonders for visitors to discover鈥攎assive chains and shackles, a mysterious door suspended 10 feet up a solid stone wall, urns with richly-coloured Japanese Maples, curious old metallic bed frames that border the pentagon-shaped mound where the wagon sits, and sculptural elements, climbing plants, and more.
The installation will remain open through the spring of 2017.
Lock grew up in the Okanagan and studied art at the Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver.
Warren has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Victoria and has been exhibiting her work and teaching art in the Okanagan since 1995.

The fun-filled show brings gives families the opportunity to engage with their favourite charactersfrom the show.
鈥淧eppa Pig鈥檚 Big Splash has been so successful because kids adore interacting with the characters on stage. Just like the popular TV series, the live show is funny, lighthearted and a delight for the whole family,鈥� said Jonathan Shank, executive producer, Red Light Management.
鈥淧eppa Pig鈥檚 Big Splash is everything fans love and expect from the TV show combined with the excitement of live theater,鈥� added Lib Campbell, the actress who beat out 2,000 people who auditioned to play the role of Peppa Pig live on stage.
鈥淓veryone gets the chance to jump in muddy puddles with Peppa and sing along with Polly Parrot. Fans at each show can be seen singing and dancing in the aisles.鈥�
