Technology is being used to help Central Okanagan Public Schools (COPS) keep track of its buses and students.
Buses have been equipped with telematics software that provides real-time monitoring, turn-by-turn route directions, and bus stop placement.
鈥淭his modernization of the transportation system will improve the safety, comfort, and efficiency of students鈥 commute while providing additional peace of mind for parents,鈥 according to a COPS media release.
An integrated bus pass system, using RFID technology, monitors students getting on and off a bus. A mobile app, My Ride, will be available for the 2024-2025 school year.
It will allow parents to track and receive real-time updates regarding their child鈥檚 school bus route. If a student boards the wrong bus or gets off at the wrong stop, the system will alert the driver.
Transportation Service will inform parents and school staff about the new technology and what to expect with the changes.
