A curbside food waste collection program will soon be available to Central Okanagan residents.
The Regional District Central Okanagan (RDCO) Board has given staff the green light to develop the service after public engagement results showed a high level of support.
鈥淲e鈥檝e heard loud and clear the support from residents to manage food waste differently and responsibly to protect our environment and combat climate change,鈥 said Loyal Wooldridge, regional board chair.
Engagement was done in the fall of 2023 and found that 73 per ent of respondents support a curbside food waste program.
Concerns included cost and pick-up schedules, wildlife and pests as well as odours and mess.
鈥淲e鈥檙e excited to see this initiative advance with staff exploring creative and economical options for a curbside program to minimize food waste in the landfill,鈥 Wooldridge added.
RDCO staff will look at where composting of food waste can take place, if a transfer station is required, frequency of collection, and cost considerations.
