An affordable housing project led by former 琉璃神社-Lake Country MLA Norm Letnick has received initial support from City council.

YeYe Housing Society, a non-profit organization headed by Letnick, first brought the project forward in August 2022. It proposes a 20-unit townhome development at 1028 and 1030 Houghton Road, near Ben Lee Park. The project aims to make homeownership more accessible by offering units at a 25 per cent discount to first-time buyers.

鈥淭his is definitely a unique proposal,鈥 said Councillor Ron Cannan. 鈥淎 public-private partnership focused on providing affordable housing, and I fully support moving this forward.鈥

The design includes several features to foster inclusivity and community, such as four wheelchair-accessible units, a community garden, a play area, a BBQ space, and a shared lounge.

At its meeting on Monday (Nov. 25), council gave initial approval to rezone the property, allowing the project to move ahead.
