The City of 琉璃神社 has decided against designating some properties in Manhattan Point as future parkland.

The decision follows extensive consultations with property owners.

In March, a staff report identified several properties for potential parkland designation in the North End Plan (NEP).

Following direction from council, staff engaged with 10 property owners, held six meetings, and received eight letters and two phone calls expressing concerns about property rights, values, privacy, security, and environmental impacts.

However, rather than designating specific properties, staff recommended that the city explore opportunities to acquire property on Manhattan Point for park development as they arise.

Councillor Luke Stack, and others, supported the strategy.

鈥淚 think overall this is the right approach at this time,鈥� he said.

Mayor Tom Dyas also encouraged lakeshore property owners to engage with the city when considering selling their properties.

鈥淔or the use of all of our citizens, and being fair to them regarding the purchase price.鈥�

The NEP engagement revealed a strong desire among 琉璃神社 residents for increased waterfront park and beach access.

Building on the 2040 Official Community Plan, the NEP aimed to enhance waterfront parks, beach access, and connectivity at Manhattan Point.

The draft NEP, including this current policy, will be presented to the council in the summer for further consideration.
