RCMP are cracking down on youth.
The 琉璃神社 RCMP Community Safety Unit has deployed officers and increased evening patrols following multiple violent events involving youth this fall.
鈥淲e heard the community鈥檚 concerns and concentrated our patrols in parks and public spaces focusing on downtown City Park, Centennial Park, Gyro Beach and Ben Lee Park. Officers conducted more than 30 youth probation compliance checks and as a result, a dozen breach of probation investigations were opened. RCMP Youth Support Officers collaborate with Youth Justice Services to recommend charges to BC Prosecution Service on these matters,鈥 said Sgt. Scott Powrie of the Community Safety Unit.
On Sept. 27, a 13-year-old girl was attacked and beaten by multiple teens at Gyro Beach on Friday.
Five youths involved in the attack were arrested and released with strict conditions by 琉璃神社 RCMP and all have future court dates. Mounties are monitoring the five youths to make sure they comply with the conditions.
RCMP are working with the city and other agencies to address criminal, safety, and youth matters. Proactive patrols and engagement are expected to continue throughout the year.
