Lakewood Mall is getting a bit of a makeover鈥攁t least in its basement.

At its March 18 meeting, Lake Country council approved a three-year temporary use permit for a self-storage facility in the mall鈥檚 lower level.

The space, which covers 18,000 square feet and will house 68 storage units, had been sitting vacant despite efforts to lease it out. The owners explored various options, including a bowling alley, but couldn鈥檛 find any takers.

The new facility will have 24-hour access, but no flammable, toxic, or hazardous materials will be permitted on-site.

One concern raised was about a Taekwondo studio currently operating in the basement. However, mall owners assured council that the tenant would not be evicted and could be accommodated on the main level.

The 46-year-old mall is in need of some fresh energy, and owners say they have plans to reinvigorate the building. It was put up for sale in 2023 for $11.5 million and purchased by Stream Property Partners.
