A low number of FireSmart grant applications in the community had West 琉璃神社 Mayor Gord Milsom asking questions at council鈥檚 Oct. 22 meeting.
Just nine homeowners have applied for the grant.
鈥淚 thought there would be many more applicants, particularly after our experience with the McDougall Creek wildfire last year,鈥 Milsom said.
Fire Chief Jason Brolund noted it is FireSmart season right now and the department is pushing hard to complete home assessments.
鈥淥ur staff, in the third quarter, have completed 60 home assessments and working overtime to complete more,鈥 he added.
Home assessments are a pre-requisite to receiving a grant which is funded by the province through the city.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a little bit of added complexity to the grant program this year and could be contributing to the those lower numbers,鈥 Brolund pointed out. 鈥淢y message to people is the grants are still open and will be until Nov. 1.鈥
