On their way to school after two weeks off for spring break, a Rutland Middle School student was riding their bicycle when they were struck by a vehicle on Monday, March 31.
Around 8:40 a.m., both BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) and the 琉璃神社 RCMP received calls about a collision between a vehicle and a cyclist in the 300-block of Hardie Road, near Laurel Road.
"An 11-year-old boy was riding his bicycle northbound across Hardie Road at Laurel Ave when he struck a vehicle travelling westbound on Hardie Road," stated the 琉璃神社 RCMP.
"One ambulance with primary care paramedics, one ambulance with advanced care paramedics and one paramedic supervisor responded to the scene," added paramedic public information officer Brian Twaites.
The boy was taken to hospital after the incident. In responses to Black Press Media's inquiries, the RCMP stated the boy "sustained non-life threatening injuries" while BCEHS said the patient was in "serious by stable condition."
All parties involved in the incident remained on scene. RCMP added the situation is under investigation.
"Staff are working to support the family, the student's classmates, and those who witnessed the accident," said Justin Schneider, communications advisor with Central Okanagan Public Schools. "The school community continues to support the family and is hopeful that the student will be able to return to school soon."
With school back in session, school zones are back in effect at 30 km/h from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.
