The Regional District of Central Okanagan is reminding people to be bear aware but is also closing a portion of Mission Creek Regional Park.
As of Sept.17, a portion of the Soopolallie and Kokanee Trails will be closed between the Kokanee Bridge and Cottonwood Bridge to keep visitors safe.
RDCO says fall typically sees increased bear activity with the ripening of fruits and salmon returning to the streams.
Park staff recommend visitors travel in groups no smaller than four and make plenty of noise on the trails to let bears know of your presence. Dogs should be kept on leash.
If you run into a bear don't go in for a hug, instead remain calm, stay away and make sure the bear has a clear escape route.
Bears posing a threat to the community should be reported to the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277.
