An RCMP investigation is underway into who cut down a number of Ponderosa pines in 琉璃神社鈥檚 Mission Ridge Park.
The incident was reported to the City of 琉璃神社 and attended by staff who discovered 10 mature pines that were destroyed and two that were damaged.
鈥淲e are taking this offense seriously,鈥 said Todd Cashin, urban forestry manager for the city. 鈥淭hese specific trees were used to provide stability to the steep, sandy slopes of Mission Ridge Park.鈥
Cashin noted the removal of these trees will increase the erosion potential in the park, adding slope stability is key to protecting the homes at the top of the slope.
A city media releases states the downed trees now represent a potential wildfire fuel hazard which will need to be mitigated.
鈥淭his illegal destruction of municipal property is a serious offence, punishable by steep fines (approximately $100,000),鈥 the release said.
