A West ÁðÁ§ÉñÉç woman is taking the time to better the city by launching two petitions on Change.org.
Anna, who did not provide her last name, has lived in West ÁðÁ§ÉñÉç on and off throughout her life and returned to the city at the beginning of summer.
On Aug.10, Anna launched one petition to and the other to .
Anna is looking to have West ÁðÁ§ÉñÉç's Traffic Calming Policy implemented on Westlake Road and surrounding areas.
"Within that policy they describe a series of steps to evaluate the area... What they'll provide is slower speed limits, speed bumps, and then they'll continue to monitor the area to make sure it remains a safe and calm area for, I believe, up to one year after they implement it."
In order for that to happen, Anna said she has to collect signatures from half of the households in the affected area. She wasn't sure how many signatures she needs, but has gotten support from over 80 people online.
The petition related to black bears is asking that the city take the steps to become Bear Smart using the guidelines laid out by WildSafeBC.
Anna told Black Press that the Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals found that West ÁðÁ§ÉñÉç is among the top 10 deadliest B.C. communities for black bears.
The petition calls for the city to bring in certified bear-resistant waste collection bins and better educate the public on co-existing with wildlife.
Anna has gained over 170 signatures to protect black bears in B.C. since it launched.
Black Press Media has reached out to the City of West ÁðÁ§ÉñÉç for comment.
