6 former 琉璃神社 Rockets help UBC to Canada West championship

UBC beat Calgary 5-3 in the gold medal game

The UBC Thunderbirds won their first Canada West men鈥檚 hockey championship in 53 years, partially with help from six former 琉璃神社 Rockets.

In the gold medal game, they beat the University of Calgary 5-3 and now advance to the University Cup National Championship.

The team consists of former Rockets Liam Kindree, Jake Kryski, Jake Lee, Conner McDonald, Jonathan Smart and Cole Schwebius. Kryski scored in the gold medal game while Lee and Kindree each collected an assist.

Schwebius, a 琉璃神社 native, made 22 saves in the win.

鈥淚t鈥檚 pretty surreal right now,鈥 said UBC head coach Sven Butenschon following the historic victory. 鈥淚t鈥檚 relief. When you鈥檙e the top seed and you鈥檙e kind of expected to win and you鈥檙e supposed to win, that鈥檚 a lot of pressure and the group seemed to really thrive under pressure. I鈥檓 so proud of them, just so proud of the guys.鈥

Former Rockets Adam Kydd and Jake Poole were on the other side of the ice in the game, earning silver with Calgary.
