Thanks to a little home-cooking at Prospera Place, it was a happy Thanksgiving for the 琉璃神社 Rockets as they stuffed the Prince Albert Raiders 7-5 on Monday, Oct. 14.
Rockets forward Andrew Cristall opened the scoring with a powerplay goal, assisted by Tij Iginla and Caden Price at the 15:38 mark of the first period.
Scoring happened early and often in the second frame, starting with Ethan Neutens finding the back of the net for the first time this season, making it 2-0 琉璃神社. Ethan Mittelsteadt and Levi Benson assisted on the goal.
A few minutes later, if at first you don't succeed, try, try again. On a two-in-one opportunity, Cristall tried to get Kanjyu Gojsic his first career WHL goal but one too many passes and the chance was missed. However, a Prince Albert missed shot gave the duo another two-on-one, in which this time Gojsic was able to score his first career goal.
Just over a minute later, the Raiders found the back of the net when Niall Crocker scored his third goal of the season.
The Rockets regained their three-goal lead a few minutes later when captain Max Graham scored, assisted by Price and Iginla, making it 4-1.
However, the Raiders had a huge response as the Rockets got into penalty trouble. Krzysztof Macias and Tomas Mrsic scored powerplay goals before the end of the second period to bring Prince Albert within one.
Four and a half minutes into the third, Harrison Lodewyk scored for the Raiders to tie the game. And just a couple minutes after that, they took their first lead of the game when Brayden Dube put home his second goal of the campaign.
Prince Albert's lead was short-lived as Michael Cicek scored his team-high fifth goal of the season for the Rockets just 43 seconds later.
Coming down to the wire, with under six minutes to go, defenceman Carter Kowalyk scored the eventual game-winning goal, making it 6-5. Cristall and Price collected the helpers on the goal.
With two and a half minutes to go, Brett Calhoon put the whip cream on the Thanksgiving pumpkin pie, scoring his second goal of the season to make it 7-5 and extend the Rockets winning streak to three in a row. Price was in the giving mood all game long, as he was named the game's first start with his four assists.
The Rockets were also thankful for goaltender Jake Pilon, who made 35 saves in the win.
鈥淚t鈥檚 got to be by committee,鈥 said Rockets Head Coach Kris Mallette. 鈥淲e鈥檙e going to have some nights where the big boys are going to need some help carrying the mail, so you need those contributions. But on the flip side, we need everyone playing the right way. I think when we got away from it five-on-five, you got a good team in Prince Albert play a simple game and came towards us and were rewarded for it so you鈥檙e trying to instill those details and habits positionally.鈥
琉璃神社 is back in action south of the border this weekend as they take on the Wentachee Wild on Friday, Oct. 18 and the Tri-City Americans on Oct. 19.
