West 琉璃神社 Warriors woes continue, drop first game of BCHL Showcase

The West 琉璃神社 lost 5-3 to the Chilliwack Chiefs at the BCHL Showcase on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

The West 琉璃神社 Warriors losing streak is now three games after falling 5-3 to the Chilliwack Chiefs at the BCHL Showcase on Tuesday night (Oct. 16).

Chilliwack opened the scoring late in the first period when Price Grimes found the back of the net for the first time this season.

West 琉璃神社 came out strong in the second period was Sam LeDrew scored his fourth goal of the year 2:16 into the frame, assisted by Jackson Kyrkostas and Luka Graziano.

Less than three minutes later, Callum Hughes scored his team-leading fifth goal to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead. The goal was assisted by the newest member of the team, Hudson Miller, in his BCHL debut.

The lead was held for around five and a half minutes before Chilliwack's Caleb Elfering tied the game 2-2, which was the score going into the third.

In the final frame, Chilliwack's special teams came to play. Just 2:48 into the period, the Chiefs took the lead after Mateo Mrsic scored shorthanded.

But just 45 second later, the Warriors converted on the same powerplay when Dylan Krayer scored, tying the game 3-3. Kyrkostas assisted on the goal.

At the 12:43 mark of the frame, Mrsic scored his second goal of the period, this time on the powerplay to take a 4-3 lead.

The Chiefs made it a two-goal lead a few minutes later when Nathan Morin scored his fourth goal of the campaign on a penalty shot. 

Warriors goaltender Ayo Ogini made 19 saves in the loss.

West 琉璃神社 is now 3-4-2 on the season. They are back in action for game two of the BCHL Showcase on Wednesday night and they're in tough as they take on the 7-0-0- Brooks Bandits, the only undefeated team remaining in the BCHL. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. at the Chilliwack Coliseum.
