UPDATE 2:05 p.m: Vernon RCMP confirmed that four people died in a collision near Monte Lake on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
Shortly before 9 a.m, police received multiple calls about a two-vehicle collision in the 3800 block of Highway 97 near Monte Lake. The two vehicles collided head on and four people, including the drivers of both vehicles, were declared deceased at the scene. A fifth person was transported from the scene by B.C. Emergency Health Services in critical condition.
鈥淭his is a terrible tragedy and our most heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased,鈥 said Const. Chris Terleski, media relations officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP. 鈥淥ur thoughts are also with the first responders and members of the public impacted by this event. No additional details will be released at this time as we are still confirming the identities of the deceased and in the process of notifying the next of kin.鈥
The cause of the collision has not been determined. Single alternating traffic is now open on the highway. Motorists may experience disruptions as police continue their investigation at the scene.
UPDATE 1:30 p.m: Highway 97 is now clear in both directions in the Monte Lake area.
ORIGINAL: A serious collision involving two vehicle has closed Highway 97 in both directions this morning.
The B.C. Highway Patrol and the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP responded to the incident early on Tuesday, Jan. 16 near the 3800-block in Monte Lake.
Detours are currently being created and motorists are advised to check DriveBC for updates.
