The Armstrong library is extending its hours to 10 p.m. July 15 to 18 in response to the heat warning.

Armstrong residents can cool of well into the evening at the local library this week.

The city has extended the opening of the Emergency Operation Centre and is working with the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness and several community partners in response to the extreme heat emergency.

The Okanagan Regional Library – Armstrong Branch at #1 – 3305 Smith Dr., is open and has extended operating hours to 10 p.m. from Monday, July 15 through Friday, July 19 for people looking to cool themselves down.

"The city encourages residents and visitors to take advantage of places to cool off and hydrate within the community," Armstrong officials urge.

Visit local places like coffee shops and stores, as well as:

• Armstrong Spallumcheen Museum & Art Gallery 3415 Pleasant Valley Rd

• Armstrong Seniors Activity Centre 2520 Patterson Ave.

• Nor-Val Sports Centre, 3351 Park Dr.

• Memorial Park Splash Pad (open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) 3285 Pleasant Valley Rd.

• Armstrong-Spallumcheen Outdoor Pool (public swim 12:15 to 9 p.m.) 3285 Pleasant Valley Rd.

Residents are encouraged to use the buddy system and check in with friends, neighbours, and family who might require assistance during heat events.

Also be prepared to change your routine. If outdoor tasks are required, consider performing them before 11 a.m. or after 5 p.m.

"Be aware of how to stay healthy in the heat. Be aware of the signs of heat related illness and what to do."
