With approximately 60,000 people expected to take part in this long weekend鈥檚 Canada Day festivities in downtown 琉璃神社, the waters of Okanagan Lake will be much busier than usual.

琉璃神社 RCMP are reminding the public of some useful tips to prevent on-water accidents.

鈥淭he RCMP鈥檚 vision is to eliminate senseless and preventable deaths on our waterways,鈥 reads a news release.

鈥淭he majority of accidents are caused by the boat operator and not by mechanical, equipment failure or environmental causes.鈥

Before heading on the water, boaters should always make sure there are enough lifejackets on board for everyone.

Human carelessness and speed are two of the largest contributors to injury, said Inspector Rob Pikola of the West 琉璃神社 RCMP.

鈥淧lease don鈥檛 race your boats on the lake.鈥

If swimming, RCMP are warning not to push your limits, as many drowning incidents are from fatigue and being too far from shore.

Police will be out on the water all weekend.
