A large quantity of bagged up drywall was illegally dumped on the road that leads to the Greater Vernon landfill.
Brian Nadeau posted a photo of what appears to be dozens of bags of material on the Vernon Rant and Rave Facebook page.
Stacey Raftus, communications officer with the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO), told The Morning Star the bags were tossed on Birnie Road, just down the road from the Greater Vernon Diversion and Disposal Facility.
Raftus said staff at the disposal facility were notified of the bags and contacted AIM Roads, which collected the bags Thursday morning.
"We are assuming that the person who did this did not want to pay the fees attached to disposing of so many bags of asbestos," Raftus said. "They also would have had to call the facility ahead of time to bring such a large load."
The area where the bags were dumped is outside of the jurisdiction for RDNO bylaw enforcement, said Raftus, meaning the regional district's penalties for illegal dumping wouldn't apply, and the RDNO has no information on if the person who did this was caught.
"The situation was resolved very quickly, but we encourage all residents to do their part in preserving this beautiful place that we call home," Raftus said.
