Summerland Secondary School has been subjected to a rash of break-and-enters and acts of vandalism during this year.

Alan Stel, principal of the high school, said the most recent event, on the weekend of April 13 to 14, occurred when the chain link fence at the automotive compound was cut. The school was entered and around $3,000 worth of tools were stolen.

Police and security staff attended the scene.

鈥淭his act was fully premeditated,鈥 Stel said, explaining that the people responsible for the break-in knew they were entering an area where tools were kept.

He added that the theft of the tools has affected the work students can do in the school鈥檚 automotive program.

Other incidents have included thefts from break-ins into the building and thefts from vending machines.

Fire extinguishers have been discharged and graffiti has been left on walls at the school and interpretive nature signs set up at and near the school have been damaged.

Stel urges those who see suspicious or unusual activity at the school, especially at night or on the weekends, to report it to the police.
