The leader of the New Democrats is looking to lower energy bills, create jobs and curb the "worsening" climate crisis with a new plan to address the carbon tax and eliminate subsidies to oil and gas companies.
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh was joined in View Royal by south Island candidates for the announcement as the campaign trail heated up Monday (March 31).
"The way we win this fight against the threats of Donald Trump is not by making Canada more like the United States, that's not how we do this," said Singh. "The way we win this fight is by doubling down on who we are as a country. By doubling down on the values that make us who we are. We believe in taking care of each other, it's a Canadian value."
The NDP is pledging to end the consumer carbon tax for good, after new Liberal leader Mark Carney also moved to eliminate the tax. Singh said they will keep the industrial carbon price and the emissions cap 鈥� which Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre says they will eliminate.
In addition to the tax cut, the NDP hopes to axe oil and gas subsidies, which will redirect $18 billion to "help people, not pad the profits of oil CEOs," Singh said, by offering a program to retrofit millions of homes with energy-saving upgrades.
"Over 10 years our plan is to get 3.3 million homes retrofitted, lowering their costs, lowering their emissions, helping families out," said Singh.
The NDP says they will announce more climate measures in the coming weeks as they continue their campaign.
