The RCMP鈥檚 emergency response tactical team, police dogs and many police officers descended on a quiet neighbourhood in Penticton after a man and woman allegedly pointed a firearm at a driver in an attempted carjacking Tuesday night.

A Penticton man and woman were arrested and a firearm was recovered after the scary situation on Killarney Street.

At approximately 6 p.m., a resident of Killarney Sreet called police to report that an unknown man and woman had attempted to steal his vehicle. The two suspects left after being confronted by the resident, said police.

Another Killarney St. resident called 911 shortly after to report a man and woman had allegedly pointed a firearm at a driver with the intent of carjacking their vehicle. Once again, the suspects were unsuccessful in taking the vehicle. They ran away from the scene.

Police quickly descended on the area.

With help from the public, frontline and plainclothes officers, as well as the Southeast District鈥檚 Emergency Response Team and Police Dog Services, a man and woman were successfully arrested near Government Street and Carmi Avenue.

鈥淭hankfully, no one was physically harmed during these disturbing incidents,鈥 said Cpl. James Grandy. 鈥淲ith the immediate and effective deployment of policing resources, including officers from Summerland, the suspects were safely apprehended, along with a firearm.鈥

A 48-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman, both local residents, are being held in custody.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact the Penticton RCMP, 250-492-4300.
