A long-awaited sports infrastructure project will be in the spotlight when Penticton City Council deliberates its 2025 budget.

City officials have been asked to determine what it would cost to renovate a lacrosse box near Skaha Lake, following a notice of motion from Coun. Helena Konanz.

Her motion — unanimously passed — could impact several different sports and their user groups in the community, not just lacrosse.

"There are a lot of dry land sports really needing a home, and I think there's a lot of kids that don't have a (sports) home," Konanz said. "We need to keep them busy and active, and having fun. I think this might be a good place to have this facility but I'd like to look at a staff report."

It is unknown at this time what renovations at the facility would look like, however, the potential project has come across council's desk in the past.

In April 2023, the Penticton Minor Lacrosse Association (PMLA) presented its vision for the facility to municipal politicians. A petition that called to renovate the space, later signed by more than 670 people, included plans to install a roof, bleachers and penalty boxes.

At the time, PMLA said it started the petition amid limited availability of practice and game facilities for indoor lacrosse players across Penticton.

City council will hear the financial implications of the potential renovation plan when it meets for budget deliberations from Nov. 19 to 21.

"This can satisfy a lot of sports," Konanz said.
