Princeton Ground Search and Rescue assists in rescuing injured hiker

The hiker was in a challenging and rugged area

Princeton Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) was part of a mutual aid call on Sunday evening.

On March 23 around 5 p.m., Princeton GSAR responded to a call alongside Princeton Highway Rescue and Penticton & District Search & Rescue (PenSAR) to assist in accessing an injured hiker in a rugged area that GSAR called "challenging."

The volunteer ropes team, along with PenSAR's rope team and Highway Rescue, navigated their way up a steep scree slope to assist the hiker who had suffered a knee injury. After stabilizing, warming and packaging the hiker, the teams began the technical descent down the difficult and uneven terrain to the waiting ambulance. The whole process took three hours.

"We're grateful for the teamwork and collaboration between teams," Princeton GSAR stated. "We're thankful for the opportunity to assist in bringing the hiker to safety."

Earlier in the day PenSAR also responded to a stranded motorist on Forest Service Road 201.

With the help of Penticton RCMP and PenSAR on the way up, the motorist was brought to safety around 2 a.m.

PenSAR reminds those going into the backcountry that the 201 above Penticton, and many other alternate routes and FSRs in the area are not maintained nor plowed.
