The Peachland Water Protection Alliance is hosting its third annual bird watching tour on June 3, and they are looking for some of the cutest owls around.

The small municipality of Peachland, which is nestled into the banks of the Okanagan Lake, is home to a community of Northern Pygmy owls. The tiny owls are a rare species in B.C. and some populations of the little birds around the province have become endangered.

During the bird watching tour, the Water Protection Alliance will document any sightings of the bird as part of a data collection project to determine the Pygme鈥檚 population and preferred habitat.

鈥淲e need to get a handle on what their populations are doing. A family-friendly bird watching field trip is the perfect activity to get this done,鈥 said the Peachland Water Protection Alliance Chair, Jack Gerow.

While the Northern Pygmy Owl is the star of the show, bird watchers will also be seeking other species of birds from small songbirds to raptors.

The bird watching event starts at 9:00 a.m. on June 3, at the Hardy Falls regional park parking lot, rain or shine.

The event is by donation, and participants are encouraged to pack water and a bag lunch as the bird watching tour will take a few hours.
