A new pilot program looks to support Salmon Arm events designed with sustainability and supporting local in mind.

As part of the city鈥檚 Municipal and Regional District Tax MRDT event funding program, the Salmon Arm Economic Development Society has launched a new initiative, SA Green, intended to encourage event planners to think strategically about planning eco-minded events in the community.

Through the online application process, available at a, those interested in program funding must specify what SA Green priorities the event will align with (Waste Reduction, Support Local, Sustainable Exploration and Water Conservation) and provide information about how they might be achieved. Applicants must also explain how the funding will support the MRDT goal of increasing overnight stays in Salmon Arm.

Regarding SA Green priorities, examples of actions are provided for each. Options to 鈥淩educe Waste鈥 include offering compostable and recycling solutions, avoiding single-use promotional materials or attendee items (name tags, lanyards, etc.) and having a 鈥渓eave no trace鈥 plan for event clean up. Suggestions to 鈥淪upport Local鈥 include procurement of local items, foods and products for an event, and use of local hospitality/accommodations (reducing travel); and having an event plan that reduced the overall carbon footprint and environmental impact. 鈥淪ustainable Exploration鈥 could involve use of carpooling or a shuttle, as well as offering itineraries, maps and local information that communicate safe and sustainable exploration in the area. For 鈥淲ater Conservation,鈥 event planners may consider conservation along with protecting natural wetlands and water sources; and having refillable water station and potable water access. If the event is utilizing utilizing rivers, lakes, wetlands, beaches or any outdoor environments near area waterways, planners might consider what information will be shared with guests or promoted based on the time of year of the event and its location.

To further inspire applicants, SAEDS also provides a long list of local projects and initiatives taken by businesses, organizations and others that are 鈥渢hat are carving a 鈥楪reen Path鈥 for us all.鈥

A review committee will discuss applications and determine if an event qualifies for funding, 鈥渙r other ways to support your event and provide a response.鈥
