It's seller beware as Salmon Arm RCMP search for a tattooed man described by victims in Facebook Marketplace deals gone foul.
Police said both victims were out hundreds of dollars after handing over their items for sale before obtaining payment.
The first incident was reported on Feb. 9. Police said the seller agreed to pick up the buyer in Tappen and drive him to a local bank.
"The seller gave the buyer the cell phone she was selling, then the buyer went inside to get cash," said RCMP media relations officer Const. Andrew Hodges in a media release. "The buyer never returned to pay the seller, and was not able to be located."
In the second incident, reported on Feb. 23, the seller met the buyer at a public location in Tappen. Hodges said the buyer had convinced the seller he had sent an e-transfer in the amount of $1,250.
"The seller allowed the buyer to leave with the laptop before the e-transfer was received. The e-transfer was never received, and the buyer was not able to be located," said Hodges.
In both incidents, the buyer was described as male, 40-50 years old, with an average build, approximately 5鈥�10" and with hand and neck tattoos.
Police are advising to use extra caution when using online marketplace platforms.
"Cash is the safest method of payment," said Hodges. "Meet in a public place 鈥� your local police detachment parking lot is a great option. Ensure you receive full payment before handing over items for sale."
Police highly discourage the use of e-transfers with anyone you do not know personally.
"Do not send e-transfers as 'deposits' for items for sale," added Hodges.
