Shuswap donkey refuge mourns loss of co-founder

Rob Miller will be picking up the reins at the Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge after the passing of his wife, and the refuge's co-founder, Shirley Mainprize. 

In an announcement shared Thursday, March 6, the Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge Society board said Mainprize passed away on March 3 "after a courageous battle with cancer."

Miller, who founded the refuge with Mainprize, will now will be taking on the role of board president.

The board said a special tribute to Mainprize, her life, her work, and her vision for the future of the refuge, will be featured in an upcoming newsletter "dedicated to her unwavering commitment to the donkeys in her care."

"In addition, a celebration of her life and legacy will take place at the Refuge this summer, following consultation with her family," said the board. "Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Shirley鈥檚 husband Rob, her son Kris & daughter Shannon, and Shirley鈥檚 extended family at this time.

"At this time, the Board also wishes to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Donkey Refuge, who have gone above and beyond in caring for the donkeys and mules, maintaining the farm, and ensuring the smooth operation of the charity during this challenging time. Their dedication is deeply appreciated"

Continuing Mainprize鈥檚 legacy, longtime friend, advisor and supporter of the refuge, Leanne Rutley will be joining the board at its next AGM.

"Her guidance and support will be invaluable in the months ahead, and the Board looks forward to working closely with Leanne to ensure the continued operation of the Refuge."

Founded in 2011 as a registered charity, the Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge, located near Chase, provides a safe, secure and permanent home for more than 100 neglected, abused or unwanted donkeys and mules. The refuge welcomes visitors to see the donkeys and learn about equine rescue and care during the summer from May 2 to Sept. 7. The Refuge will open its gate on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. 

Those wishing to honour Mainprize鈥檚 memory and help continue her work, donations to the to the refuge would be greatly appreciated, said the board.
