The fast likely became the furious after six drivers had their vehicles impounded for excessive speed by Sicamous RCMP.

The first driver was pulled over by police at 1:50 p.m. on Sept. 20, when an officer noted a 2004 Infiniti G35 passing other vehicles on Highway 1 at an "extreme speed."

"The vehicle was confirmed on radar to be travelling at 163 km/h in the 100 km/h zone near Malakwa Road," Sgt. Murray McNeil said in a media release.

Later that same day, at 10 p.m., police noticed another vehicle also travelling at an extreme speed while headed east on Hwy. 1 near Malakwa Loop Road and confirmed it to be doing 202 km/h in the 100 km zone.

"The officer stopped the 2021 BMW which was confirmed to be a rental car from Ontario," McNeil said, adding the driver was issued a $483 ticket for excessive speed and had the vehicle impounded for seven days. "Rental car companies charge their clients for the impoundment and recovery costs when their vehicles are impounded, which will add to the driver's cost for his excessive speeding."

RCMP put the brakes on another two speeders Sept. 21, with the first stop occurring at 12:30 p.m. when an officer noticed a Yamaha and two other motorbikes headed eastbound on Hwy. 1.

"The driver of the lead bike suddenly accelerated to 147 km/h, which was confirmed by radar," McNeil reported.

Later that evening, at 8:30 p.m. while officers were conducting speed enforcement at the four-lane section of Hwy. 1 in Malakwa, they saw an Audi sedan travelling 153 km/h in the 100 km section. The following two incidents also occurred on Hwy. 1, with a Camaro clocked at 145 km/h at 8 p.m. on Sept. 23, and a Chevy Silverado doing 147 km/h Sept. 24 at 10 p.m.

With the exception of the out of province rental car, all other drivers received $368 tickets for excessive speed, and had their vehicles impounded for seven days.
