A Sicamous resident is lobbying to have safety improvements made at an intersection on Highway 1 that is becoming a "hot spot" for collisions.
In a July 23 letter to council, JRL Enterprises Ltd. (Sicamous Truck & Car Wash) owner Nicole Lafreniere expressed concern about the intersection in front of her business at Hwy. 1 and Maier Road.
"We witness accidents at this intersection on a weekly basis, which is a serious concern for the safety of both drivers and pedestrians," she wrote. "Although the speed limit is 60 km/h, vehicles often exceed this limit, exacerbating the risk of collision."
Lafreniere said the main issue comes from westbound vehicles turning left onto Maier Road, with the lack of a designated turn lane significantly contributing to the number of accidents that occur there. To improve the situation, she offered potential solutions of prohibiting left turns onto Maier, or installing a dedicated turn lane.
"The safety of our community and the well-being of those who travel through this area are of utmost importance," Lafreniere added. "I am saddened by the number of accidents occurring in front of my business and am hopeful that with your assistance, we can work towards a safer solution."
Though the letter was included on the Aug. 14 agenda, council was unable to access the correspondence package online due to an Internet outage so it's being forwarded to the Aug. 28 meeting for discussion at that time.
