UPDATE: 6 p.m.
A worker who fell to his death at Sendero Canyon over the weekend fell just one storey, but reportedly hit his head on a rock, according to an executive with the project.
Emergency officials were called to Sendero Canyon before 9 p.m. Sunday after a man鈥檚 body was found. Penticton RCMP said it is working with the B.C. Coroners Service and WorkSafeBC in their investigations.
Ewen Stewart, president of Azura Management, one of two companies running the Sendero Canyon project, said he has only heard third-hand about the incident. He got reports from supervisors of the construction site, who got a call from emergency crews on Sunday.
Those supervisors called WorkSafeBC, and officials promptly came out to the site and interviewed people involved.
鈥淭hey were attending to it last night, so my fellow ran over there, because it was Sunday 鈥 nobody was theoretically working,鈥 Stewart said.
鈥淣ormally people call and let us know if they鈥檙e working on a weekend, but hadn鈥檛 heard from this guy.鈥
Stewart added the roofer, a subcontractor with another company, does not appear to have called the company he works for either.
As for safety, Stewart said he isn鈥檛 sure what could have been done differently from the company鈥檚 perspective, calling it 鈥渁 tragic result.鈥
鈥淎s best as we can tell, the rope鈥檚 up there, and the anchor鈥檚 up there for him, but he didn鈥檛 appear to have his safety harness on,鈥 Stewart said of the roofer, who is a subcontractor with another company.
鈥淗e was actually on one of the lowest-roof houses we鈥檝e got. It鈥檚 a rancher, one story. But apparently he hit his head on a rock is what I鈥檓 told.鈥
He added the company holds weekly safety meetings and has a full-time safety person and regular reports with the WorkSafeBC.
Stewart said the worker was well-known by workers on the site, having done roofs of numerous houses in the project, 鈥渁nd he did a good job.鈥
鈥淗e鈥檚 been around quite a while,鈥 Stewart said. 鈥淓verybody knows him. A lot of them went home today.鈥
Stewart said he is awaiting a WorkSafeBC report to get more information about the incident.
