Central Okanagan students and teachers celebrated a successful trip to El Salvador over the spring break holiday.

During a Central Okanagan School District meeting on Wednesday night, students and faculty took turns sharing their experiences from their trip.

鈥淲hen we left on March 15 none of us knew what to expect,鈥� said teacher Deb Nicholson, who visited the country for the first time.

鈥淚 can say for all of us, we were nervous about coming onto the building site, but once we got there one of the biggest challenges was the heat,鈥� said student Kenisha Charles.

The group of students and teachers spent their time learning about the history of El Salvador and its civil war, bonding with the locals and building a 700 square foot home for a family.

Students spent their days carrying and laying out bricks before mixing concrete and pouring it between the bricks.

In their spare time, they also spent time playing soccer with the locals and a version of the song Stella Stella Ola.

Even though the local kids couldn鈥檛 speak much English, they were still able to form teams. They also had a baseball game and donated school supplies to a local school.

This was the Central Okanagan鈥檚 fifth trip with Habitat for Humanity.
